About these times

Sri Lankan mosques follow the timetable published by the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), the country’s recognised body of Islamic scholars. Rather than recomputing times from a generic formula, Akhi AI publishes that timetable directly, district by district and day by day, so what you read here is what your local masjid follows.

Asr and the Shafi’i ratio

Most Muslims in Sri Lanka follow the Shafi’i school, where Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its own length plus its noon shadow. The Hanafi position places Asr later, at twice the object’s length. ACJU’s published times use the Shafi’i ratio, which is why the Asr azan on this site matches the mosques around you.

Azan, iqamah and jamaath

The times listed are azan times — the moment a prayer’s window opens. Mosques then call the congregation, the jamaath, a set number of minutes later. That gap is a local decision, so for congregation times always check with your own masjid.

Ramadan, Suhoor and Iftar

During Ramadan, Suhoor ends at the Fajr time and Iftar begins at the Maghrib time shown for your district. Akhi AI carries a dedicated Ramadan hub with a fasting countdown alongside these timetables.

Where do these prayer times come from?
Every time on this site is taken from the published timetable of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), the recognised body of Islamic scholars in Sri Lanka. ACJU applies its own adjustments for each district, and Asr follows the Shafi’i shadow ratio used by most mosques in Sri Lanka.
Why do prayer times differ between Colombo, Jaffna and Batticaloa?
Sri Lanka spans roughly three degrees of longitude and latitude, so the sun rises and sets at slightly different moments across the island. Eastern districts such as Batticaloa and Ampara see sunrise and sunset earliest, while Colombo and the west coast are a few minutes behind. ACJU publishes a separate timetable for each district to account for this.
Is the azan time the same as the jamaath time?
No. The times listed here are azan times, meaning the moment each prayer window begins. Mosques call the congregation (jamaath) some minutes later, and the gap differs from mosque to mosque, so confirm with your local masjid.
